Quick Look

Check-up and Xrays

You cannot see in your mouth and you cannot see problems – your dentist can by looking and taking occasional xrays to see areas not visible by eye.

Your dentist should then advise you , if necessary of steps you can take to improve the health of your mouth, and correct problems at an early stage using simple treatments.

That way you avoid tooth-ache, tooth loss and costly complex treatments

Preventive dentistry

We all have teeth - and we all want to keep them for life! The purpose of Preventive Dentistry is to help each of us keep our teeth and gums healthy today and every day

Prevention is easy and really amounts to
  • Using a fluoride toothpaste as fluoride helps to strengthen teeth against decay. Most have fluoride- adult pastes are best.

  • Excellent dental hygiene including interdental cleaning (interdental cleaning is not necessary for children)

  • A diet with low frequency of sugar comsumption (3-4 times a day max) Too much sugar can damage your liver, healthwise it is best kept to a minimum, so train your children early !

  • A diet with low frequency of acid food and drink- acid dissolves teeth making them thinner- Don´t ever brush after having acid food or drink- as this rapidly thins the teeth and causes sensitivity. Wait for several hours.

  • Mouthwashes for preventing decay and gum disease – these should be used if advised by your dentist. If your oral hygiene is really good then they should not be necessary.

Preventive dental treatments include:
  • Fissure sealants and sealed fissure fillings to seal the fissures so that bacteria and sugar cannot enter.

  • Fluoride varnish or gel application to strengthen teeth against decay mainly used for people with a high dental decay rate .

  • Cleaning (by you and the dental hygienist) to remove plaque and tartar at the gum level This helps to prevent gingivitis and gum disease.

Fillings

When most people think of a "filling", they imagine an item made out of some sort of material, either metal or plastic that is placed directly in a hole in a tooth and carved to resemble the original shape of the tooth.

There are three major types of direct filling materials

Direct fillings are placed in a prepared hole in a tooth, carved or molded to look like a tooth, and then light cured or allowed to harden;

  • Silver amalgam, made of a mixture of an alloy of silver-tin and liquid mercury

  • Composite (combination of glass/porcelain particles in a plastic matrix)

  • Temporary filling materials

There are also three major types of indirect filling material; these are made by a dental technician from a mould of the teeth

  • Gold (and other semi precious metals)

  • Fused porcelain

  • Composite (There is an indirect form of composite which some dentists use.)

These fillings are more expensive and generally used only in selected cases, where a normal filling is very difficult, and the tooth is not yet ready for a crown.

Childrens dentistry

We believe it is important to make dental visits fun and non-threatening for all , and especially kids.

It is important that they come regularly at least once a year from age 3 , (6 monthly in some cases )

This way they get used to the noises, smells and surroundings and prepare them for future visits..

We aim to:
  • Check on cleaning and give advice where needed

  • Provide preventive treatments ,including fluoride and fissure sealing new molar teeth

  • Look for decay and stop it with small fillings or concentrated fluoride at the early stage

  • Spot developmental problems at an early stage and if possible correct early to avoid complex orthodontic treatment later on.

Our advice to you is:
  1. Clean your child's teeth as part of their daily hygiene routine. Stand or sit behind your child, cradling their chin in your hand so you can reach their top and bottom teeth more easily, and see what you are doing –also they will be comfortable.

  • When the first teeth appear, use a children's toothbrush with a small smear of toothpaste.

  • Supervise your child's brushing until they are at least seven.

  • Use a small-headed toothbrush with softish , nylon bristles, suitable for the age of your child.

  • Don't forget to brush behind the teeth and onto the gums.

  • Remember to encourage your child, as praise will often get results!

  1. Prevention! The main cause of tooth decay is not the amount of sugar or acid in the diet, but how often it is eaten or drunk.

The more often your child has sugary or acidic foods or drinks, the more likely they are to have decay.

It is therefore important to keep sugary and acidic foods to mealtimes only, where posible .

If you want to give your child a snack, try to stick to cheese, vegetables and fruit./ dried fruit .

  2. Use a fluoride toothpaste- most have fluoride anyway which strengthens the teeth against decay.

Dental Hygiene and Gum treatment

This is No.1 in dentistry since your mouth and gums can never be really healthy unless they are really clean.

Remember bacteria grow in warm wet environments where there is plenty food !

Our hygienists will thoroughly clean you teeth both above and below the gum-line and they give you the individual advice you need to keep them that way. (brushing and interproximal cleaning- in between the teeth)

This way you can keep gum disease at bay. If you have gum disease then your dentist and hygienist will work together to effectively treat that problem and keep it a bay with regular maintenance visits (cleanings and check-up) to suit you needs.

Replacing Teeth

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a metal rod that is placed in the jawbone to hold a false tooth in place. They are usually made of titanium, a metal that is well-tolerated by the body.

Over 2 to 3 months, the bone fuses with the metal implant. A small attachment is left protruding through the gum, and dentures or bridges can be screwed or clipped onto this attachment.

One implant can support one or more false teeth. Five or six implants are usually used to replace all the teeth in the jaw.

Why have dental implants?

There are a number of reasons why you may choose to have implants.

  • Implants are an alternative to conventional bridges and partial dentures. (see picture below)

  • If you find that your denture is a bit loose, implants can be used to anchor the denture in place.

  • When you lose teeth, your jawbone may start to shrink. Implants can help slow down this process.

  • Your dentist may recommend using implants to support a bridge rather than affecting healthy teeth either side of a gap (see Related topics).

Bridges
We can replace missing teeth by using bridgework to `bridge the gap' by crowning adjacent teeth. This way the new teeth are fixed and not removeable, so they feel like natural teeth. This relies on he adjacent teeth being strong enough to support the bridge.
Dentures

We also create smiles with different types of removeable dentures. If you are a denture wearer , then you don´t want to feel or look like you are wearing them.

We will design your dentures for maximum comfort and aesthetics and we guarantee your satisfaction- we hope your smile is our recommendation .

Bruxing, Clenching TMJ pain and Migraine

Bruxism, an unconscious grinding and clenching of the teeth, can damage teeth, cause migraines, and contribute to jaw joint, tmj, problems.

It can lead to enlarged masseter muscles which is unattractive ( hamster cheeks ).

The primary causes of bruxism are stress and tension.

There are a few types of appliance that can be made to try and break this habit and the problems caused by it.

Dentists have found that the NTI-tss can prevent clinching and grinding.
